This week, we focused on our paper prototype for Lumina, our first game. The paper prototype consisted of controls, character pieces, and an interactable map. Through the playtesting experience, we learned how players approached this tutorial level and interacted with the game.
Here are three shots of our paper prototype, including the different variants we used to test. The first and third demonstrate limited abilities to traverse the level while the second image demonstrates free reign of using abilities.
Overall, it seemed like players enjoyed using multiple abilities to tackle obstacles in different ways. Here are some things we plan to implement based on the playtesting:
- A concrete explanation of controls and interactions, likely spread out through the progression
- Set rules for how stamina will work when encountering hazards
- Set rules for when objects will respawn after use
- Rewards for missions that require completing a level with ability restrictions
From here, we will be beginning our digital prototype using the game engine Unity.
